Welcome to the review of the latest Amazing Spider-Man issue, The Amazing Spider-Man #23 by Zeb Wells. Spider-Man is one of the most iconic and beloved superheroes in the Marvel universe, so let’s see what this latest issue has in store for us. The way our review scale works is based on our interpretation of the story, artwork, and Cover Options of the issue. Please beware with most reviews there is the possibility of spoiler alerts, so if you don’t want anything spoiled wait until after you’ve read to check out our review!
WHAT DID PETER DO?! We opened this series with a question. The centerpiece of the answer is a flat-out fight.
How Are We Feeling After This Issue?
This book picks up from the last few issues arc, where years ago, Spidey stopped The Emissaey’s plot to merge himself with the Mayan God Wayep. Turns out The Emissary is back to get his revenge on the wall crawler and Mary Jane by sending them to an alternate dimension to be used as sacrifices to Wayep. This issue felt kind of short, but not in a bad way, I think this is a nod to the desperation that Peter is feeling to get back to MJ and save her in this alternate universe that she’s stuck in due to The Emissary.
The theme/idea of time is talked about for what feels like half the issue. Cameos throughout were nicely done to help show the urgency that Peter has to get back. It was kind of odd seeing Peter have a black eye and bruised face from his fight with Wayep throughout the entire issue, but kind of fun. In the end, we go back to the one who we don’t want help from so we shall see what those two are up to in Issue #24!
Cover Options
This issue has a solid line of Cover options, we start with the Main Cover option where Spidey runs into his Fantastic Four friends hanging from some webs. This Main Cover is a cool throwback to the first cover where Spidey is hanging out with the Fantastic Four.
Cover B or the Bachalo Variant is probably my favorite out of the four covers. We see Spidey on a building somewhere with a Spider hanging down from his web. Both are engaged in what appears to be an intense eye staring contest, with the yellow toned background this is a must grab for the issue.
The Cover C is the continuation of the Pastrovicchio Disney100 Variants, this one being the Infinity Gauntlet Cover. What If? Mickey and Friends had to save the universe? Fantastic Variant that is probably our second favorite of this set. It’s always interesting when they switch up the cover but keep it a different story. (i.e., I’m buying a Variant with The Infinity Gauntlet, but I’m about to read Spider-Man).
Last but surely not the least, the Alex Ross Mysterio Variant. This is another Alex Ross virgin masterpiece variant that is being released as of late. If you collect the Alex Ross Variants, I don’t blame you because they are timeless. Definitely ones that I’d think about grading and displaying.
