The nightmares continue as we take a peak back into Insomnia’s perspective in Knight Terrors #2 by Josh Williamson. We’re pretty deep in the new Knight Terrors DC Event and have explored the terrors of many DC Characters now. As the summer event continues, Deadman unleashes the power of the dead in the latest cliffhanger and wakes up Wesley Dodd, aka The Sandman. In this review, we’ll explore the beginning of Knight Terrors #2 and see what DC has in store for us this issue. The way our review scale works is based on our interpretation of the story, artwork, and Cover Options of the issue. Please beware with most reviews there is the possibility of spoiler alerts, so if you don’t want anything spoiled wait until after you’ve read to check out our review!
Knight Terrors (Part Two)
Oh dang—I gotta do another one of these this month? Batman and I are joined by…Wesley Dodds, the Sandman?! What the heck? I thought I was the only dead person allowed in this story. I guess not! We uncover one of Wesley’s oldest cases, which haunted him until the day he died—and it points us in the direction of the Nightmare Stone. But Insomnia has unleashed his own army to hunt us down…the Sleepless Knights. And this issue is their first appearance, kids! Get scared!
How Are We Feeling After This Issue?
A striking panel that caught my attention was where Insomnia relentlessly hunts for the elusive stone, reducing the cult leader to smithereens with a unique method – exploding coins. Now, that’s an artistic touch worth mentioning! However, the issue was not without its weaknesses. It sometimes succumbed to an interesting pace and a somewhat chaotic narrative structure. The transitions were occasionally jarring as the story leapt from the nightmarish realm to the past, then once again diving into Insomnia’s nightmares, eventually culminating in ambiguity, shrouded in the darkness at the issue’s end.
As this issue lays the groundwork for the anticipated event, some leniency will be afforded. The sense of anticipation is tangible, the setup is paving the way for what promises to be a riveting climax. The melding of Deadman and Sandman into the narrative arc has been an intriguing addition. Sandman, famed for his ability to induce sleep, is undeniably poised to play a pivotal role in what is referred to as “the one case that got away.” Looking forward, the intrigue escalates as we wonder what sort of challenge the Sleepless Knights might pose to our protagonist heroes. For now, though, this issue gets my lukewarm endorsement as a must-read, primarily due to its significance in the overarching storyline.
Cover Options
Knight Terrors continues to have a wide array of cover options being unique. We start with the Main Cover option where we see Sandman, Batman and Deadman with “their backs against the wall”. This cover shows the urgency of the situation where most of the living got his with a nightmare gas and fell asleep, only leaving robots and dead people to move in their place. The main cover for Knight Terrors #2 is my take home issue this go around, even though the 1:25 is fantastic, keep reading to see why.
We move on to the Cover B Francesco Mattina Card Stock Variant. What is there to say about this one. It is another mad creepy cover, but this one feels symbolic and is obviously a nod to Dodd, aka Sandman. This more realistic cover is a great option for this issue and gets a kudos from me. Again, just not my cup of tea genre wise.
The Cover C is the Mahmud Asrar Card Stock Variant. Another variant that is dedicated towards Batman being the host of Deadman. This one gives off more of the Knight Terrors: Batman vibe if you’ve been collecting the Batman line for Knight Terrors. A lot of his covers have a bat with a pistol coming out of his head. In this cover it appears that it is Batman’s pet.
Last, we have the 1:25 Jeff Spokes Card, which is a homage to Death in the Family. We have seen a lot of homage covers over the years with Marvel and DC, it feels like most of them turn out to be ratio incentives, this issue is no different. However, this was definitely an iconic cover and story in the legacy of Batman so it is pretty neat to see Batman holding Bruce as a child. If you don’t mind spending the extra or you luck out and find a ratio for a great deal this is definitely a fun one if you’ve been a fan of the Knight Terrors series so far.
