RISE OF THE UNDERWORLD PART 3 OF 4 / NIGHT AT THE CIRCUS, PART 3
Who is the Grinning Man, who’s always grinning no matter what he’s doing, even when he’s murdering people, and what kind of deal did he make with Neron? Nightwing and the Titans better figure that out soon before they lose one of their team members… Then, in the backup, Nightwing continues his lessons mentoring Jon Kent, a.k.a. Superman, and this time it’s about using your detective skills instead of your fists.
How Are We Feeling After Nightwing 103?
Nightwing 103 starts off strong with the Titans game planning on how to keep the girl safe. Once the team splits up Raven takes Cyborg and Nightwing to the Underworld to find the deal that Blockbuster made with Neron. Some fun banter happens while this group is in the Underworld searching. However, Starfire and squad get caught off guard by Wonder Woman in a familiar setting, only to find out it’s the Grinning Man out of jail. It will be interesting to see how the story progresses with the deal that Neron suggests to Nightwing in the cliffhanger panel.
In the backup story we see Nightwing and Superboy find the one who cut the rope and why. Nightwing sympothizes with this individual and wonders himself what it would be like to “have a normal life”, but fear not Superboy is there to tell him he’s not normal and that they need to kick villain butt and find the culprit who planted the bomb at the circus!

Nightwing 103 has a solid line of Cover options and choosing the take home issue was no easy feat for this book. We start with the Main Cover option which is done very well, I think we’ve all been to a gas station and have seen some decorative license plate holders, this is a fun touch and also shows who owns this town, hint: Nightwing owns Bludhaven.
We move on to the Cover B the Travis Moore Card Stock Variant Cover. This cover to me, reminds me of the fun Hellfire Gala Variants that are done each year in wake of the Hellfire Gala arc in Marvel. The Titans look like a million bucks and the portrait in the background just proves how much on the same page they really are.
The Cover C option is the Jamal Campbell Cardstock Variant Cover. I have been on these covers for a while now, I think Campbell has a great way of showing a small amount of tones in a cover while also making them pop at the same time. The more important color in this is the Nightwing Blue on his chest. For me, this is the take home cover of this issue.
Lastly, we have the Scott Superman Cardstock Cover which is great product placement for DC currently with all of the new Superman reboots and also the back story with Nightwing and Superboy. This is a fun cover and if you are a fan of Superman you should definitely pick this one up along with the other Superman cover variants being released soon with the Dawn of DC titles coming to your LCS Doorstep weekly.
